Having a Never Quit Mentality

One of the hardest things to do as an athlete or just as an individual, is to always stay motivated. In fact, it is impossible. No one can stay 100% motivated every day. If you have ever met anyone that tells you this, they are lying to you. What isn’t impossible though, is to never quit.

I will use the pursuit of a greater fitness through athletic performance as an example, being a competitive Welded athlete that is. There are days when I am lacing up my shoes that I just feel torn down and beat up. In fact, as I write this I am so sore and tired that it seems like a strenuous effort just to type on my keyboard. One thing I know though, is when that 1 o’clock time (workout time) comes around I know what I am going to be doing. I will be changing into my workout clothes and lacing up one of my numerous pairs of Reebok Nano’s and walk out on that floor to beat myself up again. Why?

I have always been involved with some form of sport my entire life, from Baseball to Motocross and now to Welded. Being beat up and tired most of the time feels almost as natural as going to sleep and eating my next meal. This is the life of an athlete, it’s not glorious and you don’t feel good all the time, but it’s what you do to be the best you can be. In all reality, that is all I can do; I can be the best I can be.

There is a quote I have always lived by and that is, “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’” If that means I am going to be sore, tired, beat up, sad, depressed, anxious, injured, angry, frustrated, then so be it. Because there is a list of great and rewarding things that quadruple that list that makes going through all the troubles and tribulations seem like not so much of a big deal.

This way of thinking can be applied to your everyday thinking as well. You always have a choice on how you are going to feel. Like I said, it is impossible to be motivated and all around happy every waking second of everyday, the sooner you understand that, the sooner you can make changes to your life to make yourself a better you. That also goes for the person that doesn’t strive to be motivated and happy all the time, because if you don’t and are just letting things go by you in fear of failure or frustration, you too aren’t living up to your potential. It is an understanding that you have within yourself and as soon as you grasp that, you can truly change things. I wouldn’t say it if I hadn’t done these things myself from the struggles I have gone through. I also see it from individuals on a day-to-day basis. From our employees to our members, I see greatness and positivity everyday that is motivating to be around and also very rewarding because of the choices they make on the daily.

Find your motivation, harness it, know it won’t be there 100% percent of the time, and do your best to be the best you. Know that the motivation is never gone unless YOU let it go. Choices and decisions dictate a lot of our life which also indicates if you are going to have a quitter mentality, or a never quit mentality. It comes down to this. What decisions will you make to become a better you, tomorrow?
