Don’t Waste Your Time

By: Derek Wellock

Today the race for first is real. We judge people and define success by how much money you have or how accomplished you are in your career. With this as the definition our society places on us being successful we seem to lose track of our most valuable asset, which is time.

We only have so much time. We don’t know when it will run out on us, but if we live a healthy life we can make it as far as 90 years. People run out of time often when they least expect it. I heard a story this morning of a father losing his daughter who was hit by a drunk driver at the age of 21 years old. She ran out of time and he ran out of time with her. This isn’t the norm but it does happen and it can happen to anyone at any time. Death can swoop us away and time will no longer matter.

I’m not writing this to be morbid, but to reiterate the importance of spending quality time with your family, friends and loved ones. Taking time to be a dad, a husband, and a friend is one of the most important things you can do in your lifetime. We think that if we make enough money now that we will get to spend the golden years with our family and make up for it, but the unthinkable might happen and that plan goes to crap.

The number one thing I hear when it comes to taking care of your health, being a parent, or a friend is, “I don’t have time”. Time management is one of the most important things you can do. If you ever say you don’t have time, you are wrong, you simply don’t have the ability to manage your time and say no.

Take a couple minutes and watch this video, then take the time to set up a time management schedule for everything that matters in your life. I had someone say it is strange that I schedule family time. I say it is ignorant not too. If I don’t schedule it, it will be the first thing that gets sacrificed as the day goes on. Making a schedule and sticking to it can allow you to get back hours of quality time that matter. I care about my job, a lot, but I care about my family and my health more. If you don’t have your health you don’t have anything and you can’t do anything for your family, your job, or anything else that matters.
